Saints boss Mallinder expects Myler to be fit for London Irish clash

Both players have been suffering from calf injuries, with Corbisiero having limped off after just 27 minutes of the LV= Cup win against Wasps last Saturday.

The prop, who was released by England on Tuesday, will face a late fitness test on Thursday morning, with Saints naming their team to take on Irish at Franklin’s Gardens at noon.

But fly-half Myler, whose injury ruled him out of contention for England’s Six Nations opener in Wales last Friday, stands a far greater chance of making the Northampton starting 15.

“Stephen’s had a bit of a calf strain so we’re working on that and getting him fit,” said Saints boss Mallinder.

“Alex Corbisiero has got a bit of a calf injury that he picked up last week when we brought him off. It’s not major - we just need to make sure it’s right this week.

“Stephen’s finished a session today (Wednesday). He’s fine, he’s trained really well.

“Alex is going to be running tomorrow and we’ll make that decision tomorrow whether we pick him or not.”

Meanwhile Mallinder delivered some positive news on Jon Fisher, who has not played since injuring his foot in an LV= Cup game at Scarlets in November.

The flanker joined Saints after a successful trial during the summer and impressed during his eight appearances before sustaining the problem.

“Jon Fisher is really coming on and it was good to see him out training this week so in another week or two he’ll be putting his hand up for selection,” said Mallinder.

“He was playing very well. He came to us last summer and he’s stepped in and done fantastic.

“He’s a great ball carrier and he’s looking fit and big and strong at the moment so I’m really looking forward to having him back.”
