The venue, which has helped top sports teams such as German football giants Bayern Munich hone their talents, has hosted strong man-style feats and other tortuous activities.

And North, who is now fit again after missing the final two months of last season with concussion, said: “It’s been pretty savage by anyone’s standards. For the boys who were here from the last World Cup and are preparing for this one it’s been a hell of a step up.

“The heat is a stimulus, which is horrendous for the bigger guys, trying to run in it is horrendous.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do pre-season wise. I’ve been to places no man should be in on his own - I’ve seen gremlins and different things when I’ve been running, but that is pre-season.”
