Two-try Weimann explains what Saints coaches want to see from him

Jonny Weimann says playing on instinct helped him to deliver for Saints at Harlequins on Saturday.

The England Under-20s scrum-half bagged two tries at the Twickenham Stoop as he excelled in his typical No.9 role and, later in the game, on the wing.

Saints were eventually beaten 38-31 in the Gallagher PREM final-day encounter, but the loss didn't detract from Weimann's strong display.

"It was my third PREM start and I just try to go out there and not think about it too much," the 20-year-old said.

"The coaches just want me to be instinctive, to back myself and that's what I tried to do."

Weimann, who has now has 17 Saints appearances and three tries to his name, added: "Some of us boys have been slogging away throughout the weeks in training so it was nice to get a shot.

"I got to test myself a bit, tried a bit of the wing there, it went better than I thought and it was good fun.

"It was a chance for us to put our foot forward for the rest of the season and the start of next season as well.

"We just tried to put our best foot forward and try to get our best game on the pitch. We did that in parts.

"Our breakdown was a bit sloppy and there's definitely stuff to go at going into this week."

Weimann moved to the wing during the second half as Saints took off Tom Litchfield, Fraser Dingwall and James Ramm ahead of this week's Gallagher PREM play-off semi-final at home to Leicester Tigers.

And Weimann was able to make an impact out wide, intercepting a Marcus Smith pass and running in to double his try tally on the day.

"It was my first touch on the wing so it was a pretty good one!" Weimann said.

"Radders (Saints defence coach Lee Radford) likes us getting high up the field in the picture and that's what I did.

"Luckily the ball found its way to me, I managed to have the wheels and finish it.

"My mum and dad were up in a box somewhere so they got some nice hospitality and I had a few mates there as well so it was nice for them to see me do my thing."

With Alex Mitchell currently injured and Archie McParland assuming the No.9 role, there is an opening for either Weimann or Tom James to be named on the bench against Tigers this week.

"There's a chance to play so we'll see what the team selection is this week," Weimann said.

"I'd like to be involved but it's not up to me.

"Every day, I just try to put my best foot forward, and hopefully I did that."

On facing Tigers, Weimann said: "It should be a good one.

"Friday night it is, so it should be quite feisty."
