Self-isolated Saint: Owen Franks

Saints fans on social media have probably already seen how Owen Franks has been spending some of his time in self-isolation.

The 32-year-old was filmed pushing his car as he took part in some homemade scrum practice.

But what else has Franks been doing during his time away from Franklin's Gardens?

We caught up with him to find out.

"There have been no dramas really," Franks said this week. "I've been training and hanging out with the family, doing the home schooling stuff with the kids.

"I've just been trying to keep some scrummaging strength there and I've had to make do with the station wagon!

"It would definitely be easier if we were in training.

"It's easier training in numbers and the rugby skills side of things is pretty tough when you're by yourself but I've always, even from when I was younger, trained alone or just me and my brother.

"I'm sort of used to training in isolation in some respects already.

"Every pre-season we go off and do our own training so it's been fine."

While some players openly admit they struggle to train solo, Franks has it down to a fine art.

"In the gym I like a lot of space," he explained.

"A lot of gyms are quite chaotic, people pump music up, especially in a rugby environment when you've got a whole team in there.

"I enjoy a bit more space, but at the same time when you're in a group you feed off the energy and there's competition there as well so there's pros and cons to both."

Franks moved to Saints from the Crusaders last summer, having made 108 Test appearances for New Zealand, the most of any prop.

And although he admits he does miss home a little, he isn't finding it too tough in his relatively new surroundings.

"I do miss home a bit, but probably my wife more so because her family are all pretty close," Franks said.

"They would probably prefer her to be there, but at the same time everyone's in the same boat in New Zealand. They're on lockdown so they probably wouldn't be able to see much of each other anyway.

"It's fine being here, it's good and it's good our family is together.

"We live in a nice spot in Northampton with a park just across the road. We get lots of exercise and the weather's turning good as well so it's all good."

Fortunately for Franks, he can discuss things with his brother, Ben, another Saints prop currently in the same situation.

"We still speak on the phone," Owen said.

"As far as training with each other, we haven't been able to.

"Hopefully they relax those rules soon."

The Franks brothers, both double World Cup winners, would dearly love to be back on the pitch to complete the season, especially as Ben is due to retire at the end of this campaign.

And Owen said: "I'm pretty desperate (to play).

"At the start it's like 'yeah, cool, there's some time off and we'll be back into it soon' and now I'm just really keen to get back into work.

"I'm keen to play rugby again and it makes you realise how lucky you are to be a professional sportsman playing rugby.

"I can't wait to get back into it."
