Saints star Dingwall: You don't ever really want to write us off in these fixtures

Fraser Dingwall feels Saints are a tough team to write off in big away matches after their heroics in Europe during recent seasons.

The black, green and gold face their toughest domestic fixture this Saturday as they travel to take on Gallagher PREM champions Bath at The Rec (kick-off 5.30pm).

But England centre Dingwall insists he and his team-mates will be full of belief after beating the likes of Leinster, Munster and, most recently, Section Paloise away from home during the past few years.

“We're well suited now to taking on top teams at their place and you don't ever really want to write us off in these fixtures,” said Dingwall.

"Whoever it is within the group who gets the opportunity, everyone's going to be really excited to have a good crack at them.

"A lot of it is just going down there with the attitude to go after a team.

"It's very easy when you play top teams to sit back, watch, hope, absorb what they do and try to control them, but that doesn't really work when you want to beat teams.

"It's all about who can put their own game on the pitch so we'll be going there with full confidence and belief that if we go there and do our stuff then we will get a great performance and a result.”

Bath are currently top of the PREM table, two places and three points above Saints.

"It's a massive game, an exciting game,” Dingwall added. "It's a Christmas game where you get to take on Bath at their own place and they're obviously the league holders so it's set up to be a bit of a cracker.

"When you play at the top level you want to challenge yourself against the best teams and the best players - and we've got a chance to do that. The boys are very much excited for the challenge of going down there.”

Dingwall has started the past three matches for Saints, having overcome an oblique injury suffered before England’s final game of the autumn.

“I've enjoyed it (the past few weeks),” Dingwall said. “It's been nice to settle back in at the club and get into more of a routine here again.

“Obviously the results have been pleasing because we had a good couple of weeks in Europe and then we took a step forward in our performance against Sale in the PREM so it's been really positive.”

Dingwall enjoyed a superb Quilter Nations Series campaign with England in November, starting as they claimed wins against Australia, Fiji and New Zealand.

"It was pretty special,” said the 26-year-old. “Reflecting on it all, I was really pleased with how it went.

“I'd been building towards putting a string of games together for a while and then for me to play in three of the four and us as a group to win all four, it's great to be part of that England group at the moment.

“We're doing so much really well, building together really nicely and getting better and better so it was a really special November.”

Dingwall enjoyed a memorable moment during a memorable win against the All Blacks, scoring during the second half of the clash at Allianz Stadium.

"It was a cool moment,” he said.

“To play against the All Blacks was cool enough but to score against them was something else.

“I've been told by a few people that it was on the main screen (at the Gardens) while lads were warming up (for a PREM Rugby Cup clash with Newcastle Red Bulls). Furbs (George Furbank) was telling me he was trying to get his head around playing a game and watching us on the main screen while warming up so that's quite funny.

“It was a really cool moment.”

Surely Dingwall has had the picture of that try framed and put up in his house?

"I haven't but some of my family have chucked it into a frame,” he said.

“It's hiding somewhere in my house at the moment, but you never know it might end up in a bathroom somewhere down the line, probably when I retire.”

Fraser Dingwall was speaking at the big cinchmas wrap in Northampton, where Saints' players were wrapping presents for fans and raising money for the Northampton Saints Foundation. cinch, the UK’s leading online used car retailer, takes the faff out of finding, buying and owning a car.
