Saints star Biggar: We have to be harder on ourselves

Dan Biggar says Saints need to be more critical of themselves.

The Wales star was not happy to simply take positives from last Sunday's Champions Cup quarter-final defeat at Exeter Chiefs.

Saints, who have now lost 11 of their past 13 matches, dominated that game for long periods but eventually lost 38-15.

And Biggar said: "If we're speaking frankly, sometimes it's a bit too positive and we can be a bit harder on ourselves.

"It's something we've got to get better at because it's all well and good coming into work and enjoying it, which all of us do - we absolutely love it - but ultimately there's got to be a time where you're not satisfied with how things are going and we've got to ask a bit more of ourselves and not be so happy coming into work when things haven't been going as we want them to over the past 18 months.

"It's easy when you're playing well and winning games and playing in a really good manner, but when the pressure's on us, which it is at the moment, we've got to front up a bit more and roll our sleeves up.

"We've got to find a balance, but there's no doubt the confidence in the group was low and hopefully Sunday's game will have repaired that a fraction.

"But it's still disappointing to have lost a game of rugby."

Saints' season has fallen away badly.

They were top of the Gallagher Premiership table back in December but are now seventh, having lost six successive home league games.

They host Sale Sharks in their final Franklin's Gardens match of the current campaign on Tuesday evening before travelling to Gloucester to conclude the season five days later.

And Biggar said: "We've got one more game at home and we need to win because the home form has been nowhere near good enough.

"I have to say I've found this restart really difficult without crowds.

"For me personally, I've found it incredibly hard. It's hard in warm-ups, you find yourself a little bit flat and the sooner we can get crowds back again when it's safe, the better.

"We just need to finish as strongly as possible, build some momentum going into next year.

"We need to draw a line under the lockdown period and know we've got a fair bit of work to do to get better for next year."
