Saints skipper Dickson: Glasgow game was frustrating

The skipper saw his side score a late try through Harry Mallinder as they snatched a crucial 19-15 Champions Cup win at Franklin’s Gardens on Sunday evening.

Glasgow had given as good as they’d got for long period and were 15-12 up before Tim Swinson was sin-binned with five minutes to go.

Mallinder popped up to win it for Saints, giving them a chance of making the quarter-finals when they head to Scarlets on Saturday, but Dickson knows the display was below par.

“It’s frustrating,” said the skipper

“We train all week and we want to play a game of rugby that is the Saints.

“When you get out there and things don’t go your way, it’s disappointing.

“We were on top in bits and bobs, but we didn’t have the ball security at breakdowns. We lost the ball too many times in contact.

“If you don’t keep the ball, you’re not going to score any points.”

Saints also struggled with their discipline, shipping 14 penalties during the match.

Finn Russell kicked four of those - also missing two fairly simple ones - while Stuart Hogg landed one long-range attempt and missed another.

And Dickson said: “A win’s a win and we’ll take that.

“We started the game pretty well but after we scored that try, indiscipline killed us.

“They didn’t score, so our defence was working well, but they’ve got the Scotland 10 and the Scotland fly-half, so if you give them those penalties, they’re going to kick those goals.”
