When Jamie Gibson re-joined the club as injury cover, it was announced that Wood would miss the rest of the season, which resumes later this month.

And now the reason for Wood's absence has become clear.

The 33-year-old flanker had been in some pain and was treated promptly at Northampton General Hospital.

But the good news is that he has been cleared to begin non-contact training from today, meaning he could still play again during the 2019/20 campaign.

Saints boss Chris Boyd said: “We’re naturally disappointed that Woody will not be available for when things kick off again on the August 16.

“But he’s an excellent professional and we know he’ll rehab diligently to hopefully be back in contention before the end of the current season.”
