Saints boss Mallinder seeking Scarlets bonus

Jim Mallinder admits Saints are likely to need a bonus-point win at Scarlets on Saturday - and he says they will look to play positive rugby as they go in pursuit of it.

Mallinder’s men snatched a late 19-15 win against Glasgow Warriors at Franklin’s Gardens on Sunday, ensuring their hopes of reaching the Champions Cup quarter-finals remain alive.

But with Saints currently ninth in the list of teams bidding to qualify for the last eight - they have 14 points - they will need at least a win to stand a chance of progressing as one of three best runners-up.

A bonus point could also be needed and Mallinder is looking for his team to play an expansive brand of rugby in the bid to pick up a maximum haul.

“I think we probably will (need a bonus point), knowing that we haven’t got a fantastic points difference in the competition,” the Saints boss said.

“We’ve got to go there, look to play some positive rugby.

“We’re still in the competition and that’s one of the good things.

“We haven’t been playing particularly well, we’ve had a slightly inconsistent season and we’ve had lots of ups and downs already.

“But we keep saying it - we’re still in the two competitions, so we’ll go there and look forward to playing in Wales.”
