The Bears snatched a dramatic late 18-17 success at Ashton Gate as replacement fly-half Sam Bedlow landed a penalty with the final kick of the game.

Saints had stormed into a 14-0 lead inside 15 minutes thanks to tries from David Ribbans and Piers Francis.

And Chris Boyd's side were 17-8 up heading into the final 10 minutes of the match.

But Piers O'Conor's try breathed new life into Bristol, and Bedlow completed the comeback after referee Luke Pearce penalised Ehren Painter for a deliberate knock-on.

“I think at the end of the day we are glad we got the win," said Bristol boss Lam.

“We talked about the fact they were going to be a dangerous side.

"I knew we had about 30 minutes of good weather and we needed to start well.

"We got in the right places but didn't take our opportunities, we gifted them two tries and allowed them 14 points and then the rain kicked in so we had an uphill battle and we kept making silly little errors.

“We talked at half-time about working our way back into this game and take the points on offer.

"We left a few points out there but fair play, I thought that control of the last 10 minutes, not to panic and keep putting them under pressure was excellent and we got the win in the end.

“Good teams find a way to win, and we found a way.

“When we get to the end of the season all anyone will remember is the W, however for us this week we are going to make sure we go through and take all our learnings and address all our learnings.”
