Clark spent last week training with his country ahead of Friday night’s Six Nations opener in Wales.

But the uncapped 25-year-old was released by Stuart Lancaster on Tuesday, along with Alex Corbisiero, Christian Day and calf strain victim Stephen Myler.

It is more frustration for the Saints man, who was in the England squad during the autumn but did not play a single minute.

And attack coach King said: “He’s had a great season. He’s not far away and the coaches have told him that.

“I saw him on Tuesday, he’s had a great week, he’s a 100 per center and he works his socks off.

“He’s doing everything he can to get selected.

“It’s a very competitive position, the back row, and he’s just got to be patient. When he gets his chance he’ll be ready.”
