The 23-year-old has received the late call following the news that Gloucester no.9 Willi Heinz has been ruled out the clash with a leg injury.

Mitchell will now team up with England's 36-man group ahead of the match in Rome on Saturday afternoon (ko 4.45pm).

Other scrum-halves in the training group are Wasps' Dan Robson and Leicester's Ben Youngs, who is set to win his 100th England at the weekend.

The uncapped Mitchell has been with the England squad for the past couple of weeks having been part of the training squad that got together ahead of the cancelled Barbarians match last weekend.

Mitchell joins fellow Saints Lewis Ludlam, Dave Ribbans and George Furban in the squad.

England head coach Eddie Jones will name his team to face Italy on Thursday.
