Furbank feels Saints have the confidence and personnel to claim European glory

George Furbank has stressed Saints have the belief and the personnel to go one step further in the Investec Champions Cup this season.

The black, green and gold fell at the final hurdle last year as injuries hit them hard in the Cardiff showpiece against Union Bordeaux Bègles.

Furbank was one of the players forced off early in that match, along with James Ramm, while Temo Mayanavanua also had to leave the field during the first half.

Saints are now back in the knockout stages of the Champions Cup and they have booked a quarter-final spot for a third successive campaign after seeing off Castres Olympique in a roller coaster encounter at cinch Stadium at Franklin's Gardens on Friday night.

Furbank was named player of the match in that 49-41 success, scoring a key try as he skippered his side from full-back.

And ahead of next weekend's last-eight encounter, he said: "We feel like we've got the team and coaching staff to get all the way.

"I don't think we were a million miles off last year.

"We had a few injuries and bits and bobs and things didn't go our way in that final.

"We're looking to take the next game and see where we're at next week."

Saints know they will have to improve defensively as they shipped six tries against Castres in what was a breathless battle at the Gardens.

"I'm not sure Radders (Saints defence coach Lee Radford) is going to be too pleased!" Furbank said.

"We seemed to put some good things on them and then just coughed up the ball and they capitalised on it.

"They're a dangerous side off that click stuff so it's pretty disappointing but good to get a win at home again.

"It was a classic talk about a fast start and then go 12-0 down so we had some making up to do after that.

"We were just a little bit off it and they killed us at the breakdown, but once we got that sorted out we got into our groove a little bit, built a nice score and then unfortunately let them back in at the end."
