The director of rugby has penned a contract extension that will keep him in Northampton until at least the end of the 2021/22 season.

Boyd arrived from the Hurricanes in the summer of 2018 and steered Saints to a fourth place finish in the Gallagher Premiership during his first campaign at the club.

He also masterminded a Premiership Rugby Cup triumph and a run to the quarter-finals of the European Challenge Cup.

The upward curve continued at the start of last season, with Saints sitting top of the table in December and booking their place in the Champions Cup last eight.

But things unravelled as they eventually lost that quarter-final at Exeter Chiefs and slid down to eighth in the final Premiership standings.

Boyd's third season at the club starts tonight as Saints travel to Sale Sharks for their Premiership opener.

And he is desperate to get his talented young team back on track.

“After the progress and success of my first year, for me unfortunately last season was unacceptable,” said Boyd.

“But I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far at Saints, and I am determined to help this group of players and management staff realise their individual and combined potential.

“So, I am delighted to extend my contract at Franklin’s Gardens.

"Saints is a fantastic organisation – from the owners, board and chief executive, through to the incredible sponsors, supporters and Northampton community.

"It’s a real family, which I am proud to be part of, and that has made the decision to continue very easy for me.

“Saints currently presents such an enticing challenge, the decision to extend was a no-brainer.

"I am totally committed to enhancing and growing the club on and off the field.”
