Bath boss gives injury update ahead of PREM trip to Saints

Bath are set to be without centres Max Ojomoh and Ollie Lawrence for Saturday's sold-out Gallagher PREM at Saints.

The England duo suffered injuries during last Saturday's 48-15 victory against Harlequins at The Rec.

And Bath boss Johann van Graan, who will take his side to Bordeaux for a massive Investec Champions Cup semi-final against Union Bordeaux Bègles on May 3, told Somerset Live: “So that hand of Ollie's is not too bad actually. We'll take our time with him, but we had some big fears after the game.

“Ollie is a tough man. I said to him afterwards, and I said to the team, rugby remains a warrior sport. And the fact that he cracked on for 80 minutes, got huge respect from all of us, and that sums up our team, tough to beat. So we'll make a decision when we put him back on the field.

“With Max, at first it seemed like an ankle injury, but it's actually a bit higher up, it's just below the knee.

"We're still getting some more feedback on him; he's under the watchful eye of Rory (Murray, head of medical).

“It might be a week, it might be two weeks, I don't want to speculate on that, but he's not available for this weekend.

"We've obviously got just under two weeks to go for our semi -final against Bordeaux. So, again, we'll see at the back end of next week where he's at.

"But knowing Max, he's somebody who's so diligent in his recovery. Hopefully he's back on the field sooner than later.”

Bath skipper Ben Spencer had to withdraw before the game against Quins due to a shoulder problem.

And van Graan said, “There is no real news on Ben. We made a decision that he's not going to play (against Quins).

"It is a bit in that shoulder, so we'll make a decision whether he plays this week or we make a decision on him next week.

“I'm not prepared to speculate on that. He's obviously a very important player for our captain and us. He's one of the players in the team that's played a lot of rugby.

“He is under the watchful eye of Rory (Murray) and Alex (Martin, head of physical performance), and he ran very well outside a bit earlier, so no major concerns from our side.

"We'll put him back on the field at the right time."

Loosehead prop Beno Obano (back) and lock Quinn Roux (dead leg) have also been struggling with injuries.

But van Graan said: “They're a lot better.”
