'A backward step' - Boyd far from happy despite Saints' win at Wasps

Chris Boyd feels Saints 'took a backward step' in terms of performance, despite the fact they pocketed four points from their trip to the Ricoh Arena.

Tries from Shaun Adendorff, Sam Matavesi and Taqele Naiyaravoro put Saints seemingly in control at 22-0 up at half-time.

But Wasps, who had Kieran Brookes and James Gaskell sin-binned during the first period, fought back and were just five points down going into the final 10 minutes of the match.

Saints eventually held out, despite having Naiyaravoro and Piers Francis yellow carded, and Boyd's side have now won three Gallagher Premiership games on the spin.

"I thought we were pretty decent for 30 minutes and we talked at half-time because I thought we did pretty well before half-time to keep them out," Boyd said.

"As it turned out, if we hadn't have kept them out in that half, the result may well have been different.

"We felt 22-0 was a decent lead but we knew they would come back out with renewed vigour and that 22 points probably wasn't going to be enough.

"We needed to stick to our process but we were incredibly poor in our decision making in the second half and we had individuals going off script.

"Despite the warning at half-time, in the second half we weren't accurate and clinical or anything in the second half.

"It's a good time for us to review because to come to the Ricoh and get four points and be really disappointed with your performance is not a bad place for us to look back at the game.

"We are pleased with the fact we've won three games in a row, but despite the fact we got four points today, from a performance point of view it was a backward step so we won't be happy with that."
