The chief executive hailed the latest step in engaging with the Northampton fans - Saturday’s open day - as a ‘resounding success’.

The Saints squad chatted and posed for pictures with supporters, of whom there were thought to be more than 3,000, at Franklin’s Gardens last weekend.

And Robson is now hoping the players can add to their good work off the pitch by doing something special on it.

“By any measurement Saturday’s open day was a resounding success,” he said. “We had thousands of people in through the gate and everyone left with a smile on their face.

“The atmosphere was excellent, and while the majority of people who came were as part of a family group it was very pleasing to see supporters of all ages make the most of the opportunity to see behind the scenes.

“Of course the success of an open day also depends on the attitude of our staff and players, and there was a lot of hard work put in to ensure that the event went ahead without a hitch and that there was a wide variety of activities on offer.

“It was clear that the players enjoyed themselves and their enthusiasm contributed a great deal, too.

“Hopefully we can take that feelgood factor into the next few weeks and finish the season in the best possible fashion!”

Saturday’s event at the Gardens, which included fan activities such as conducting interviews with players and taking part in rugby skills sessions, finished with a flourish.

Saints’ under-17 side eased past their Wasps counterparts, scoring 11 tries in a massive 67-5 success.
