Steelbacks searching for new overseas Blast signing as plug pulled on Matt Breetzke deal

Northants have announced that Matt Breetzke will not be returning to the club this summer.

The South African star signed a two-year all-formats deal with the County in August last year, but it has been announced he will now not be returning to Wantage Road, with the club citing the player's increased 'workload'.

Breetzke has emerged as one of South Africa's rising stars in, and is a man in demand when it comes to both international and franchise cricket.

Breetzke's commitments in the Indian Premier League meant he would have already missed the start of of the County Championship season as well as the beginning of the Vitality Blast group stages.

And with the likelihood of other international calls as well, the club has decided it would be better for both parties to make a clean break now.

A club statement read: "Northamptonshire County Cricket Club can confirm that Matt Breetzke will not be returning to the club in 2026.

"The past year has seen Breetzke rise up the ranks in international and franchise cricket, meaning that his workload needs to be taken into consideration to ensure that he continues to hit those same levels.

"With the IPL running from mid-March to the end of May, Matt will miss a number of games and with other international and potential franchise involvements, it has been decided that having an overseas player with full availability in the T20 Blast will be more beneficial to the team as we look to push towards another Finals Day appearance."

Breetzke says it 'wouldn't be fair' to return to Northants, and said: "I've really enjoyed the last two years with the Steelbacks.

"But with the amount of cricket coming up, it wouldn't be fair to return and not be there for all the games.

"I'm backing the boys to do well again this year and hopefully they get to another Finals Day."

Breetzke has been key part of the Steelbacks' Blast campaigns over the past two years, and turned in some match-winning performances as the team reached the quarter-final in 2024 and Finals Day last summer.

There was perhaps a sign of things to come last year though, as South Africa ODI commitments meant Breetzke was unable to play for the Steelbacks in the quarter-final win at Surrey, and then he also failed to return to the UK for Finals Day at Edgbaston.

Head coach Darren Lehmann is disappointed that Breetzke won't be around this summer, but admitted it would have been difficult to work around the 27-year-old's other cricketing commitments.

"We would have loved to have seen Matt back," said the Australian. "But being able to have an overseas player with us throughout the whole tournament will hopefully help us keep a good rhythm and settled squad.

"We're all wishing Matt the best for the rest of the year."

The club will announced an overseas replacement for Breetzke in the Vitality Blast in due course.

Their overseas signings for other formats are Australian Nathan McSweeney, who is on an all-format deal for the whole summer, and another Australian in pace bowler Harry Conway, who is signed up for the opening two months of the red ball campaign.

Like Conway, another player returning to the County Ground for the second half of the summer, and playing in the County Championship and One Day Cup, is Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendar Chahal.
