Northants 'damn lucky' to have experienced Glenn Chapple on Wantage Road coaching staff

Darren Lehmann believes Northants are 'damn lucky' to have Glenn Chapple on the club's coaching staff.

The former Lancashire head coach was initially brought in on a short-term basis last summer following the departure of Rory Kleinvedlt, who left Northants to take on the head coach's role at Western Province in his native South Africa.

Chapple took on Kleinveldt's duties as bowling coach, but Lehmann and the club acted quickly to offer the 52-year-old the position of senior assistant coach in October, and he accepted, signing a one-year deal.

And that was a signing that Lehmann is delighted with.

Chapple spent seven years as Lancashire head coach, winning promotion from division two in 2019, and has also worked as fast bowling coach with England, and Lehmann told Steelbacks TV: "It's like having another head coach. Glenn has been there and done it at all levels around the world.

"It is a great sounding board for me, because there are times when I don't see what he might see.

"I am not saying I am going to get it right all the time, so it's good to have those different voices.

"We are all equal, there is no structure here as such, we are all in it together coaching. It is about 'what we do need to do?' 'How do we need to improve?'

"When you have got somebody like Glenn Chapple involved then it is pretty good, and we are damn lucky to get him and we hope he stays for a long period of time.

"He has a wealth of knowledge, he has been a head coach around the world and he has been excellent at it. So for us it is really fortunate."

Chapple is currenty with Lehmann and the rest of the Northants squad and coaching staff on a warm-weather training camp in South Africa.
