NCL CRICKET: Top two swap places again as Stony take advantage of Finedon's slip

The game of cat and mouse that is the Northants Cricket League Premier Division title race took another unexpected twist at the weekend.

Finedon Dolben, had reclaimed top spot the previous week, but they suffered a six-wicket defeat at home to Peterborough Town on Saturday.

That opened the door for Stony Stratford to regain the lead in the race for silverware, and they took it in style as they thrashed struggling Rushden & Higham Town by 179 runs.

Borough kept alive their own slim hopes of winning the title with their win over reigning champions Finedon.

It was top hosting fourth at Avenue Road, and Finedon will have felt pretty confident as they declared on 278 for six from 57 overs.

Callum Berrill hit 91, Drew Brierley 58 and Sean Davis 52 as Finedon set a testing target, with Nick Green (2-69) and teenager D J Sivaganeshan (2-72) the most successful bowlers.

That left Borough with 53 overs to overhaul the Finedon total, and they did it with six wickets and 17 balls to spare - at one point sitting 215 for one in the 42nd over.

Josh Smith was the star of the show with the bat, hitting 114 from 148 balls, while Green hit a quickfire 92 from 80 deliveries and skipper David Clarke 41 not out from 34.

Daniel Bendon took three wickets for Finedon, but it was too little too late, and the defeat ensure they lost top spot to Stony who battered Rushden.

Charlie Oldershaw hit 89 from 98 balls and James Hildreth 79 not out from 68 as Stony rattled up 283 for six declared at Short Stocks, with Steven Plant adding 43.

Chana Ruwansiri took three for 50 for Rushden, who were then rushed out for just 104 in reply, opener Liam Gough top-scoring with 34.

Top man with the ball for Stony was Ben Arnold who snared six for 22 from 10.5 overs.

The win means Stony go back to the top, and now have a slim 10 point lead over Finedon, with Geddington a further 22 points back.

Geddington maintained their challenge as they brought an abrupt halt to Oundle Town's recent run of wins, the villagers claiming a five-wicket success.

Oundle were left to rue several players making starts but then not going on to capitalise as they were bowled out for 206.

Bill Amas top scored with 53, but four other players who all hit more than 20, never kicked on, with Sam Batten's 31 the next best.

Keshav Sthanakiya was the pick of the Geddington bowlers, claiming three for 14.

Geddington were left with 62 overs to get over the line, and although they took their time they got there at 210 for five in the 55th, Matt Taylor top-scoring with 68 from 92 balls.

Elsewhere, Harry Penberthy's innings proved the difference as Kislingbury Temperance won a low-scoring encounter with Overstone Park by 32 runs.

Penberthy hit 73 to rescue Kisl from a precarious 54 for five and help them post 172 all out, with Harvey Julyan claiming four for 39.

Overstone then lost wickets at regular intervals in reply as they were bowled out for 140.

Top performers with the ball for Kisl were Northants seamers Tiaan Louw (3-26) and Harry Conway (3-20), and Zaakir Khawaja (4-30).

Old Northamptonians were comfortable six-wicket winners over second-from-bottom Loddington & Mawsley at Billing Road.

Tom Webb (3026), Rob White (3-23) and Rhys Noble (3-23) were all in the wickets for ONs as Loddington were bowled out for 133 - which was something of a recovery as they were at one point 89 for nine.

ONs then eased to 135 for four in the 28th over, with Anshul Poothi top-scoring with 42.

WOMEN’S T20 Cup and Plate Finals

Kettering Town are celebrating after winning the Hevey Building Supplies Women's T20 Cup.

Kettering edged past Thrapston Green in the semi-finals, before beating Northampton Saints with a ball to spare in a high-scoring final.

In the last four, T Foster hit 56 not out and L Griffiths 28 as Thrapston posted 153 for six in their 20 overs.

That was a testing target for Kettering, but they got home at 157 for six with three balls to spare.

D Austin was the star with the bat, hitting an unbeaten 63, and support came from M Harte with an unbeaten 37.

For Thrapston, Foster took two for 41.

The final was played at Kettering, but the home side knew they were in for a tough test as Saints compiled 168 for two in their 20 overs, with Lily Scott hitting 53 and Evie Amiss-Smith 35.

The chase would then go down to the wire, with Kettering getting over the line at 170 for one from 19.5 overs!

L Billington retired not out on 52, H McCulley retired not out on 50 and Harte made 41 not out as Kettering secured the silverware.

Saints had earlier hammered Thrapston Yellow by 141 runs in the other semi-final.

Scott was again in the runs, making 55 not out, as Saints piled up 196 for seven, with other key contributions coming from Amiss-Smith (38) and Saisha Ranina (24).

For Thrapston, Grace Owen took two for 49.

The total proved to be well out of reach for Thrapston as they were bowled out for 55 in reply, with Sophie Willis taking three for 10 and Aimee Paters two for 10.

In the Plate competition, Wellingborough Old Grammarians emerged victorious after they saw off Kislingbury Temperance in another high-scoring final.

OGs took control of proceedings as they posted 173 for one thanks to excellent efforts from L Odell (35rno), R Houlden (35rno), D Brockwell (32no) and I Gray (25).

Kislingbury made a valiant attempt to overhaul that total, but in the end fell seven runs short at 166 for three.

A Allington top-scored with 37, and there were also good knocks from L Porter (36), A Dolan (22) and T Mitchell-Faulkner (22).

In the semi-finals, Kislingbury (118-3) beat Overstone Park (117 all out), while OGs (221-0) thrashed Old (62 all out) by 159 runs.
