Huge blow for Northants as Justin Broad is ruled out for the season

Northants have been dealt a severe blow with the news that key man Justin Broad has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The 26-year-old all-rounder has been playing as a batter only so far this summer as he manages a lower back injury.

He has played nine first team games to date, but the decision has been made to sideline the Steelbacks’ vice-captain to ensure he is fit and ready for the 2027 campaign.

A club statement read: “Northamptonshire County Cricket Club can confirm that Justin Broad will miss the rest of the season with a lower back injury.

“Broad has been managing a lower back issue through the first half of the season which unfortunately has not resolved, therefore the decision has been made to remove him from cricket related activities indefinitely and focus on building him back to full fitness in the coming months.”

Broad had been expected to be a key performer in all formats for Northants this summer, but he has had to be used sparingly since picking up his back injury in pre-season.

It is a bitter blow for both the player and club, and Broad admitted: "I’m extremely gutted to be out for the season.

"This has been an extremely frustrating summer for me on a personal note and I’m really sad it’s come to an end.

"However, it’s been great to see the boys doing so well and I’ll be supporting them in the upcoming months as we push for a strong finish to the season."

Head coach Darren Lehmann is a huge fan of Broad, going on record to say he sees him as a future captain of the club.

And the Australian is bitterly disappointed the player will not play again in 2026.

"We're all gutted for Broady," said Lehmann. "He's an excellent player and a real leader in our group so to lose him for the season is a blow, but it's important that we look after him and prevent any further injury.

"We're looking forward to seeing him recover well and get fit ready for the start of next season."
