That means Saints’ could call on their first-choice No.10 for the crunch LV= Cup clash at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday.

And attack coach King said: “Stephen’s in the selection mix.

“We’ve still got to finalise the team for the weekend. There are still some knocks and bangs from last week.

“We’re weighing up who needs game time and the importance of the game, with the home semi-final riding on the result.

“There’s lots of factors to take into consideration, but Stephen’s back from England.

“I spoke to him on Wednesday morning and he said it went very well on a personal level.

“Unfortunately he won’t be involved this weekend, but he’s enjoyed the experience and the more he gets, the more opportunity he will get to show the coaches what he can do.”

Saints will have to do without an England quintet on Saturday, with Dylan Hartley, Courtney Lawes, Tom Wood, Lee Dickson and Luther Burrell retained for the Six Nations showdown.

Wales wing George North is also away, as are Sam Dickinson, Alex Waller and Calum Clark, who are with the England Saxons squad heading to Glasgow to face Scotland A on Friday night.

Tom Mercey is ruled out with a knee injury picked up in the Saxons game last weekend, while Tom Stephenson, Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi, Sam Olver and Howard Packman are in the England Under 20s squad to face France on Friday night.

“We need to manage the squad,” said King.

“We’ve got four big league games coming up without our internationals and without our England Under 20s lads.

“We need to make sure we give appropriate game time to players who need it and also give a rest to players who need it.”
