Wright knows Steelmen's concentration levels must be spot on

Corby Town boss Tommy Wright wants his players to ensure their concentration levels are right as they battle against relegation

The Steelmen head to Kidderminster Harriers’ Aggborough Stadium to take on Worcester City as the bid for victories in the fight against relegation from the Vanarama National League North grows ever-more desperate.

Corby’s 3-0 defeat at Chorley last weekend left them still second-from-bottom in the table and a point adrift of Hednesford Town, who occupy the place immediately above the relegation zone.

Three first-half goals were the Steelmen’s undoing in the north-west last Saturday and it was the way they went in that left Wright frustrated.

The Corby boss was pleased with the way his team reacted in the second half but the damage had already been done.

And while he believes work on the training ground will go a long way to solving the problems, Wright insists the concentration levels of his players and their ‘game management’ must improve if wins are to come.

“We will get the boys back in this week and we will re-group,” the Steelmen boss said.

“We will have more time on the training ground because that’s the only way we can really solve it.

“To be honest, I think a lot of it is coming down to concentration and our game management.

“When we are under the cosh we have to get men behind the ball and make sure we concentrate.

“That’s where the players have to take responsibility because if their concentration levels had been right, we would have prevented the three goals last weekend.

“It wasn’t down to the brilliance of Chorley, it was down to the mistakes we made.”

This season is proving to be the mirror opposite of last year when, at this stage, the Steelmen’s challenge for the Southern League Premier Division title was really clicking into gear.

They went on to win it on that famous final day at Poole Town but the current campaign is all about trying to survive and nothing else.

For Wright, a young manager still taking his first big steps in the job, it has been a massive learning curve.

But he insists he has already learned more this season than he did in the last.

“I am learning so much more than I did last year, just off losing games and trying to find solutions,” he added.

“There weren’t many occasions where I had to do that during last season.

“When it comes to my development as a coach and a manager, this year has been a massive learning curve.”
