There's '˜something different' about the in-form Romans
Steve Sargent believes there is 'something different' about his Irchester United side this season.
The Romans are one of the form sides in Division One of the ChromaSport & Trophies United Counties League and head into this weekend’s home clash with Buckingham Town on the back of three successive victories.
Those wins have shot Irchester into the top six and they will move above tomorrow’s (Saturday) opponents, who sit in fifth, if they can make it four in a row.
Sargent insists his team won’t be getting carried away but he is delighted by the way their campaign is progressing.
“I’m really pleased, everyone is working hard and there is a real togetherness about the squad,” the Romans boss said.
“We are managing to keep the same sort of team every week, which is helpful.
“We always start the season with a lot of away games because the cricket is still going on and we had five defeats in a row.
“We have been trying to recover from that and I think we have done that now.
“Our home record is good and we can go into this weekend with confidence.
“We have beaten some good teams along the way this season and we have beaten those around us as well, which is something we have never really done in the past.
“We certainly aren’t going to get ahead of ourselves but there does seem to be something different about the lads. I think there is more maturity and they are a bit wiser at this level now.
“I think they appreciate the club they are at and the way they are looked after and I think that has resulted in some good form on the pitch.”
Whitworth maintained their push towards the top of the table with a hard-fought 3-2 success at local rivals Rushden & Higham United last weekend.
The Flourmen’s next task is a home clash with Oakham United tomorrow while the Lankies make the trip to second-placed Daventry Town.
There’s a local derby at Latimer Park where Burton Park Wanderers take on Raunds Town, Thrapston Town are on the road at Long Buckby and bottom side Stewarts & Lloyds head to another of the strugglers Woodford United.
