Stone delighted by derby day success as Doughboys go seven points clear

Jake Stone was delighted with his side's performance as Wellingborough Town secured the derby day honours with a 4-1 beating of Corby Town at Steel Park on Saturday.

In-form Doughboys made it 11 wins out of 12 in the league to move a whopping seven points clear at the top of the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division.

Danny Draper got Borough off to a flying start with a third-minute strike, but Corby got themselves back in the game when Ryan Boothe netted on the rebound after his penalty was well saved by Dean Snedker.

The second half proved to be all Doughboys though as Stone's side took control.

Skipper Jack O'Connor was on target yet again to make it 2-1 on 50 minutes, before Zayn Hakeem made it 3-1 13 minutes later and then Ethan Johnston put the icing on the cake with a fourth eight minutes from time.

With second-placed Sutton Coldfield Town dropping points in a 1-1 home draw with Bedworth United, it ended up being a very good day for Borough - with third-placed Carlton Town and fourth-placed Nuneaton also failing to win.

And Stone was a happy man.

"For the first 20 or 25 minutes we were good, and I felt we were on top," Stone told Doughboys TV.

"I thought it was really important we got the second goal then, but we didn't quite manage it.

"Corby then came into it a bit, and got the penalty, but then in the second half it was all us, I thought we were very good and deserved the win.

"Other than the penalty Sneds had very little to do, and I thought our defence were monsters in the sense of they just had to defend properly and do the basics.

"It was constantly on them as Corby played two up and with quite a narrow midfield so they had lots of bodies in front of them.

"So it was important when they did make contact that they made the second contact as well and in the second half we had it nailed on.

"We turned the screw and had loads of the play, and we could have scored more."
