Steelmen's long trip can help '˜build some togetherness'

And they are in desperate need of some points as they prepare to make the long trip to take on Workington.

The Steelmen moved into the semi-finals of the NFA Hillier Senior Cup as they beat United Counties League side Cogenhoe United 4-3 on penalties after the teams shared a 2-2 draw.

New signings Stefan Moore and Phil Trainer grabbed the goals for Gary Mills’ side but the focus is now back on their relegation dogfight.

They are seven points adrift of safety going into this weekend and Mills is hoping the long trek to Cumbria will help build the togetherness of his squad.

“It’s a long trip and a lot of time together on the coach,” the Steelmen boss said.

“Hopefully that will help build some togetherness. The more time they spend together the better.

“It will be a hard game. Workington had a good win on Tuesday night and we know we will have to perform well.

“But we go there with the likes of Stefan and Phil on board.

“They both scored on Tuesday and they are already showing that the younger lads that they know the game and they know what it takes to get results at this level.”

Mills, meanwhile, was critical of his team’s defending in midweek, despite picking up his first success since taking charge.

“I thought we moved the ball quite well, we kept possession but we didn’t create as many chances as I would have liked,” he added.

“It’s a win but I was very disappointed with the goals we conceded. I want my teams to defend better than that and the lads were told what I expect of them after the game.

“Overall, I am happy we got through but there is plenty for us to work on.”
