Steelmen ready to '˜sit back' and watch on as a free weekend arrives

The Steelmen’s clash at high-flying AFC Fylde on Tuesday night was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, meaning they are now without a match until they head to Bradford Park Avenue a week tomorrow (Saturday), although they will now play a friendly at Coventry Sphinx tomorrow (12.30pm kick-off).

Hednesford Town’s 3-1 win at bottom side AFC Telford United on Tuesday evening has left Corby second from bottom in the Vanarama National League North and a point adrift of safety after their dreadful form at Steel Park continued with a 2-1 defeat to Gainsborough Trinity last Saturday.

The Steelmen have 15 games to rescue themselves from an immediate return to the Southern League Premier Division, following last year’s dramatic title success.

And, although Wright knows the talking must stop and results will have to start coming, he remains confident of the ability of his squad.

“It was disappointing that the game was off but I’d already been given some idea by their manager on Tuesday morning so I knew it was going to go that way,” the Steelmen boss said.

“Now we can sit back and see what everyone else does this weekend, they all have their chance to do something.

“The teams around us all have games to catch up on and by the end of the weekend they would have started to do that.

“Our players will be in tomorrow morning and we have got some good time on the training ground coming up.

“We have 15 games to go, 45 points to play for and that represents a lot of football to be played.

“As we were preparing for the Fylde game, I watched the DVD of our home match with them and, although we lost, we gave them a hell of a game.

“I believe in the players and I believe there is a lot of potential in the group.

“I have no doubts that this group is capable of going on a run of three, four or five wins in a row.

“But it’s no use me saying it all the time, we need to start proving it.

“So we will let everyone else get on with it this weekend and then assess what we need to do.”

Once the Steelmen do return to action, they will have midfielder Ben Milnes available again after he served a one-match ban in last weekend’s defeat.
