Steelmen must wait a bit longer for return to action

The Steelmen, like everyone else in the Evo-Stik League South last weekend, were left kicking their heels as the programme was decimated by the freezing conditions.

But while the majority of their rivals will be back in action on Saturday, Corby have their second free weekend of the calendar year.

It means that nearly three weeks would have passed since their 3-2 success at Stocksbridge Park Steels by the time they head to Cleethorpes Town next Wednesday.

“I have certainly never known of any club having two free Saturdays in the space of nine weeks in all my time in non-League football,” the Corby caretaker-manager said.

“It’s strange that it’s worked out that way but, ultimately, there is not much we can do about it.

“It’s frustrating because we have picked up a couple of wins and you want to keep that momentum going.

“But all we can do is make sure we are ready for the next game.

“It’s strange because, by the time we play at Cleethorpes next Wednesday, we will not have played for nearly three weeks.

“And then we will be playing eight games in the space of three weeks so we have a tough schedule ahead of us.

“On the flip side of it all, it means we can give the players the time to recover and there will be some we will be pushing hard over the next week and some we will have to pull back a little bit.

“There will still be one or two who will be on the borderline to be fit for next Wednesday who definitely wouldn’t have made it if we did have a game this weekend.

“So it does mean they have a bit more time to move towards full fitness.”

Kinniburgh, meanwhile, confirmed he remains “on the lookout” for reinforcements for the run-in.

The Steelmen currently remain seven points off the play-off positions with the caretaker-boss still hopeful his team can force their way into the top six before the end of the season.

“We are still on the lookout,” he added.

“We have got to play our last 11 games in the space of six weeks and that will take its toll on our small squad.

“So we will keep looking and see if we can add one or two just to make sure we are covered in all areas for the rest of the season.”

Last weekend’s postponed home match with Kidsgrove Athletic will now take place at Steel Park on Wednesday, March 21 (7.45pm) while the clash at Carlton Town will now be on Thursday, April 5.
