Sparrow targets a new frontman for Corinthians

Sparrow has approached proven UCL Premier Division strikers Danny Wright and Kevin Byrne and Lutterworth Athletic’s Danny Laywood and hopes to speak to them all in the next few days.

Sparrow, who admits he “isn’t overly confident” he will be able to prise Laywood away from Division One outfit Lutterworth, says he started looking for a striker after the 2-0 defeat at Wellingborough Town nine days ago.

He explained: “I had to put a centre half up front and we shouldn’t have to do that.

“I don’t want to find myself in that position again.

“Am I happy with the squad? Yes, but if I can find players who would bolster it and want to be part of what we are doing here, I would be daft not to talk to them.

“You are only totally satisfied with your squad when you are 10 points clear at the top of the table and we’re not.”

Sparrow says he expects Jordan Henson to stay at Seargents Lawn.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds put in seven days for the club’s top scorer, but with Elliot Sandy moving to the Dog & Duck last week, it seems unlikely Henson will now leave.

Described as “a big character” by Sparrow, Henson returns from a two-match suspension for the home date with Wisbech Town tomorrow (Saturday).

That’s followed by a trip to Harrowby United on Tuesday night.

Last weekend, Dan Cooper was the hero for Corinthians as his stoppage-time goal earned a 2-2 draw at Yaxley.

Desborough Town get a chance to turn the tables on unbeaten Premier Division leaders AFC Kempston Rovers this week.

Last weekend, Ar Tarn were beaten 3-0 at Kempston and the sides meet again at the Waterworks Field next Tuesday night.

Bradshaw said: “We have no complaints with last week’s result and are looking forward to having another crack at Kempston next week.

“Our home form is good.

“We make it difficult for teams at Desborough and as I’ve said, somebody will beat Kempston this season.”

The clash with Kempston is part of a spell of five games in just 14 days that starts with the visit of Yaxley tomorrow.

Bradshaw reports Ar Tarn go into the busy spell at full-strength but hasn’t ruled out adding to his squad before the transfer deadline at the end of the month.

He said: “I’m thinking about what we need to do to strengthen.

“We have one or two missing in April and may need to bring players in.

“I’m going to look at things in the next few days and decide what to do.”

The clash with Yaxley brings the division’s top scorer to the Waterworks Field after Dan Cotton grabbed his 28th and 29th goals in the 2-2 draw with Rothwell Corinthians.

Wellingborough Town boss Jon Mitchell slammed his players following the midweek defeat that deepens their relegation worries.

The 5-1 loss to Sleaford Town at the Dog & Duck leaves the Doughboys just one point above the drop zone.

They are without a game tomorrow but return to action on Tuesday night when they hosts Deeping Rangers and that gives Sileby Rangers the chance to leapfrog them on this weekend when they go to Sleaford.

Mitchell says his side are in a three-way survival scrap with Sileby and Oadby and is demanding an improvement from his players.

He said: “There was no passion and no heart on Tuesday night and as a manager, that’s hard to take.

“I lost count of the number of the chances we had in the first 40 minutes, but Sleaford got two scrappy goals just before half-time and our second-half performance was inexcusable.

“It was a shambles. Everyone hid and we were second to everything.

“I’m sick of losing games and then looking at other results hoping teams have done us a favour.

“It’s up to us to get us out of this mess. We have to get as many points as we possibly can.”
