Ashley Robinson was left “incredibly pleased” with his Corby Town players after they started the new year in impressive fashion.

Two goals from Callum Westwood and a late header from James Ireland earned the Steelmen a 3-0 victory over Bedford Town at Steel Park.

The win saw Corby open up a seven-point lead at the top of the BetVictor Southern League Division One Central and joint-boss Robinson said: “I am incredibly pleased with the lads and I have been all season to be honest. The have pulled out a great performance and a great win.

“I said to them before the game that they (Bedford) would come here and make it a battle and that’s exactly what they did.

“When we got the ball down and played football we looked very dangerous. There were two great goals from Westy (Westwood) and I thought all the boys worked hard.

“We have started the new year with a cracking result against a good side.”

The Steelmen look well set for a real title challenge in the second half of the season, although second-placed Halesowen Town look to be the biggest threat as they have three games in hand.

But Robinson insists he, joint-boss Gary Mulligan and the Corby players are fully focused on the job at hand.

“We want to go on another run, we want to be staying at the top of this league for as long as possible and if we put performances like that in then we will be there or thereabouts,” he added.

“Everyone is buying in to what me and Gary are doing this year and that’s what is so pleasing.

“The board are on board, the fans are on board. Everyone is pulling together to make us what we are and we are really happy with the way the season has gone so far.

“But there is still a long way to go and fingers crossed, we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.”

The Steelmen are back on the road on Saturday as they head to Coleshill Town.
