Robinson and Mulligan delighted as Steelmen hit top spot

Nearly 500 fans were on hand to see the Steelmen open up a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Charlie Wise and Joe Burgess before the morning leaders battled back to level things up.

However, recent signing Ryan Robbins came off the bench to grab the second-half winner before the Steelmen saw things out to return to the top of the BetVictor Southern League Division One Central table.

Robinson said: “I was extremely proud of every single one of our players and I said that to them after the game.

“I put it to them, to be honest, before the game because the last time we were at home we lost to Kempston and I said to them to go out there and put a performance on for our fans and me and Gary.

“It was a tough game and credit to Berkhamsted because I thought they were a good side when they got the ball down and played.

“We grafted for the full 90 minutes and, to a man, I thought we were fantastic.

“We said it after the game, last year we would have crumbled but this year we have got men in there who want to play football and want to go until minute 90. And that is extremely pleasing for me and Gary.”

Mulligan, as usual, was on the pitch and played a key role as Corby remained solid to seal the victory after Robbins had scored what proved to be the decisive goal.

“They (Berkhamsted) are a good side but I thought the shape of our team was very good, they didn’t really play through us,” Mulligan added.

“The second goal was scored by the left-back and that’s when someone needs to follow their man. But in terms of the shape of our team, I thought it was excellent.

“The commitment was there, the fight was there and we were playing against the two best strikers in the league in terms of goals and I don’t think they had a shot on target between them.”

The Steelmen, who are now two points clear at the top, are on the road next weekend when they head to Didcot Town.
