Lifelong fan and former director Ken Samuel launched his ‘President’s Appeal’ with the aim of raising £10,000 to assist the Poppies during this spell in which they won’t be playing any matches.

Samuel reported earlier this week that the fund stood at £10,110 after just 13 days and he is now keeping it open with the aim of hitting £12,500.

In his most recent statement, Samuel said: “The cash has been used and is currently being used to cover day to day bills - accrued utility bills, gas, electricity and water, business rates and waste removal; accrued suppliers bills such as programmes, insurances, ground and pitch maintenance and also a contribution to the new concrete terracing started before the lockdown.”

And Poppies chairman David Mahoney paid tribute to Samuel and the club’s supporters for their efforts.

He added: “The President’s Appeal was a fantastic idea by Ken Samuel, every penny received has been a massive help and we can’t thank those who have contributed enough, the appeal reached its initial target in less than two weeks and is still going strong.

“It’s really not an exaggeration to say that it’s this type of initiative that will help keep clubs like our’s afloat.

“We have a few more ideas that we are considering but we are fully aware that this is a time of great uncertainty for a lot of people and therefore not everyone will be able to contribute even when they want to.

“The main thing is that we stick together and we will get through this.”
