Players are making my job easy, says Diamonds boss Peaks

Diamonds maintained their charge towards promotion with a 1-0 victory over Chalfont St Peter at Hayden Road last weekend with Tom Lorraine’s 34th-minute header proving decisive.

The win extended Diamonds’ unbeaten run in the Evo-Stik South League East to 17 matches and ensured they stayed three points clear at the summit.

There was frustration in midweek, however, as Monday’s rain left the Hayden Road pitch waterlogged, which meant they missed a chance to pull further clear as their clash with Uxbridge was postponed.

But Peaks is confident the Diamonds players’ focus will now be firmly on their next test, which sees them travel to Egham Town this weekend.

“To be honest, it didn’t come as a huge surprise because the pitch was pretty cut up after Saturday and then we had a lot of rain on Monday,” Peaks said.

“It’s a bit frustrating because we get a bit of momentum and then it is stopped but I have said before that you can’t control things like that.

“We have had matches off and the players have just gone into the next game and got on with the job and that’s what we have to do again.

“We played and won at the weekend and it’s not as if we are facing a massive backlog of fixtures so I am pretty relaxed about it.

“The players are making my job easy at the moment. I am picking the team and they are going out there and managing themselves.

“They are hungry, they are working hard and there is a massive desire to do well.

“When we have a blip, that will be when it will be important for me and my staff to get things back on track straightaway but, for the

time being, it’s all about the lads.”

As far as this weekend is concerned, Diamonds will be highly-fancied to keep their fine run going as they travel to take on an Egham team who have lost their last six games in the league and sit in 17th place in the table.

But Peaks, as ever, is remaining cautious.

“I’ve said it before and I will say it again and again, it’s never easy no matter who you are up against,” he added.

“Egham are a good club and they probably haven’t had as good a season as they would have liked.

“They have had a change of manager recently and I am sure it will be another tough challenge for us.”
