Peaks delighted with a 'massive three points' for Diamonds
Andy Peaks hailed a 'massive three points' as AFC Rushden & Diamonds secured an impressive 3-1 victory over Coalville Town at Hayden Road.
Goals from Ben Farrell, Declan Rogers and Tom Lorraine ensured Diamonds extended their unbeaten run in the Evo-Stik League South Premier Division Central to five matches as they moved into the top eight in the table.
And Peaks was delighted with the response of his players after they had suffered the disappointment of conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at King’s Lynn Town.
“It was a massive three points after the disappointment of Saturday,” the Diamonds boss said.
“It was still hurting me up until this game and I was worried how the players would react because we felt like we were robbed at the weekend.
“But it was a good comeback against a good side. It was a great game for the neutral, particularly in the first half, but I thought we controlled it in the second half. Overall, I am delighted.
“The two goals from the midfield boys set us up nicely and it was disappointing to concede so soon after our second. We were in a great position and gave them one back and it gave them the lift.
“But the reaction in the second half was pretty much exactly what we wanted.
“My remit for this one at half-time was to say ‘let’s not be involved in another good game where we don’t get anything’ and the boys did a good job.
“The league is very tight, the three points puts us in a good position but if we hadn’t got them then people would have been saying we weren’t doing well.
“Overall, I have been pleased with the performances. We have had some close games.”
Peaks piled the praise on midfielder Rogers, who produced a man-of-the-match display against Coalville.
Rogers has been in good form since re-signing for Diamonds at the end of last month.
And Peak added: “I think Dec has been fantastic since he came back.
“I know all about him, we have been friends since he was here last time.
“He has loads of talent, he needs to get a bit fitter but we pass the ball better when he is playing.
“He is comfortable on the ball and we all know what he is capable of with that left foot.”
Diamonds are back at Hayden Road on Saturday when they take on league rivals St Ives Town in the first qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy.
