Gary Mills has been appointed as the new manager of Corby Town.

The vastly-experienced boss, who has managed the likes of York City, Wrexham, Gateshead and Tamworth in the past, takes charge at Steel Park following the shock resignation of Tommy Wright, who had returned to the club earlier in the summer.

Mills, who enjoyed a glittering playing career and success with numerous clubs as a manager, will now take up the reins as the Steelmen prepare for the new Southern League Division One Central campaign.

And he has only one target in mind.

The new Steelmen boss said: “I have had a few conversations now with the owner and the chairman and they have made it clear where they want to take Corby Town, which was important to me.

“They want me to be the one to take them to where they want to get to and I am delighted to be the manager to do that.

“It’s been a while since I have been in the dugout and it’s great to be back.

“I am under no illusions of what is expected, I have been asked to come in here and take them to where they want to get to.

“Obviously, it’s always one season at a time. But the aim will be to get out of this league this season and I have come here to do that.

“I will do it my way. I will do it the way I have done for numerous years now, with some success.

“I think everybody connected with the club will see the way I work and what I like around a club I manage. The most important thing for me is that I get the right players out there to go and do what I have come here to do.

“I am looking forward to it. It’s exciting. It’s a weird time as we all know but we just have to get ready for the start of the season.”

As a player, Mills made over 700 senior appearances with his highlight being when he was part of Nottingham Forest’s European Cup winning team in 1980 while he also played more than 200 games for Leicester City.

As a manager, he won the Southern League Midland Division title with Grantham Town in 1998 and went on to lead Tamworth to promotion from Conference North in 2009.

He took charge of York City in 2010 and, in the 2011-12 campaign, led the Minstermen back into the Football League after they defeated Luton Town at Wembley in the Conference play-off final.

The 58-year-old also managed Gateshead and Wrexham before returning for a second spell at York, which came to an end in September 2017.
