Mettam frustrated as defensive lapses cost Corby Town dear at Mickleover

Leon Mettam was left to rue costly defensive lapses as Corby Town slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Mickleover in the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division on Saturday.

The Steelmen were gifted an early lead when Mickleover netted an own goal, but a loose Harrison Jones pass was then pounced upon as the home side levelled before the break.

Corby were well in the game at that point, but ended up losing after conceding twice on the break after their own attacking corners were cleared.

It was a third defeat in four games in 2026 for the Steelmen, and they have now slipped to 11th in the table, although they are only three points off the top five in an incredibly tight division.

The defeat at Mickleover was another frustrating one, and Mettam said: "We got given a gift of an own goal, but like Father Christmas we then gave them one back with a square pass," Mettam told @corbytownfc.

"We went in at 1-1 and they had a few chances which they missed and let us off, but they are very good to be fair, and I think are the best team we've seen so far.

"They move the ball well, drag people out of positions and then try and thread the passes, so we did get a couple of let-offs and going in at 1-1 we were pleased with that as we were well in the game.

"I said to the lads to not then lose the game trying to win it, and somehow we have had two corners, and we have ended up giving two goals away from our corners, and that is the most disappointing thing.

"Whether we were mis-positioned or they just broke really well I don't know, I will have to look at it.

"We knew Mickleover would be good on the counter-attack, and they didn't do anything we didn't expect, but we got caught with it.

"Again, we played some really tidy stuff in the final third, had shots that have been blocked, and when you are out of luck then you have to make your own luck, and in this game we have not really done that."

Corby are due back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Boldmere St Michaels (ko 7.45pm), who currently sit one place and two points above the relegation zone.
