Maxwell so pleased with his 'immense' players as Diamonds seal a crucial win

Richard Maxwell was full of praise for his “immense” AFC Rushden & Diamonds players as they delivered a crucial 4-2 win over fellow strugglers Kings Langley at Hayden Road.

Diamonds fell behind to Caine Keller’s early goal but levelled through Nathan Hicks, only to find themselves 2-1 down almost immediately to Brad Wadkins’ strike.

However, recent signing Andy Kanga got it back to 2-2 just before half-time and then the game turned when visiting substitute Temitore Babalola was sent-off and Diamonds substitute Conor Tee put them in front for the first time from the resulting free-kick.

And the win was completed just a minute later when another substitute Christopher Manangu slid in to score his first goal for the club.

The win move Diamonds to within a point of Kings Langley and to within three points of safety as they bid to lift themselves out of trouble at the wrong end of the Southern League Premier Central.

“The players were immense, across the whole team it was a game plan that they executed superbly,” boss Maxwell said.

“We went down early but we got the goals and we now have that confidence in the team and we have gone on and really dominated the game - and we’ve really enjoyed it.

“It was quite an open game, obviously we didn’t want to concede so early but we stuck to it, we created opportunities and we knew there would be opportunities later on as well.

“We want to play an expansive style of football which is entertaining, that’s part of what I try to do from a coaching point of view.

“We are here to entertain the fans and we want to have an open game if we can.

“We had a good team talk at half-time, we tightened up the defence a bit and we planned to use the substitutes and we just grew and grew into the game.

“Conor coming back was great for us. It was always the plan to bring him into it in the second half.

“The free-kick was amazing, I am looking forward to seeing that again. That changed the game, it was a great goal.”

The much-needed victory made it two games without defeat and came at the end of a week, which saw an EGM held to discuss the way forward for the club.

And when asked if the last two results had given Diamonds a start in their bid for survival, Maxwell replied: “It’s more than a start.

“We should have won against Bromsgrove but we said that draw would kick us on.

“We had two good training sessions, we had a good tactical plan and we have produced an enjoyable day for the fans.

“I think they enjoyed the football. It was great to get the football talking.

“We have to get ourselves together and get ourselves out of this.”
