'˜Massive position' awaits Poppies if they can hit their targets

The Poppies head into tomorrow’s (Saturday) home clash with St Neots Town on the back of four successive victories, which have kept their hopes of reaching the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division play-off places alive.

A 4-0 success at Cambridge City last weekend was followed by a dramatic 2-0 win over Paulton Rovers at Latimer Park on Tuesday night as late goals from Liam Canavan and Silvano Obeng wrapped up three more points.

The Poppies sit in eighth place, six points behind Leamington who hold the final play-off position but with a game in hand.

With four more home matches to come this month, Law still has high hopes.

And he believes that win on Tuesday night, which was accomplished without the likes of the injured Rene Howe and skipper Brett Solkhon, who was withdrawn at half-time, will give the young players in his squad a big boost in confidence.

“We have either lost or drawn that type of game (Paulton) before now and been left reflecting on a missed opportunity,” the Poppies boss said.

“That didn’t happen this time and we are now just hanging underneath the 60-point mark and we have played less games than anyone else.

“If we do what we are capable of then the next four games could certainly set us up for April.

“We had a lot of a young lads left out there but the win will give them confidence and belief.

“We have got a target that we want to achieve by the end of March and if we get there then we will be in a massive position. We will keep pushing on.”

St Neots arrive at Latimer Park having endured a surprising season of struggle after they missed out on promotion when they lost to Truro City in the play-off final last year.

But Law believes the season has been just as strange for his own club, although they are now in a rich vein of form at the right time.

He added: “St Neots got to the play-off final last year and things haven’t gone for them this season, it happens.

“We have had a strange season ourselves. Players and staff have been questioned at various stages.

“But we are heading into the final weeks with enough games left to put us in the play-offs, it’s a good chance for us.”

Law also revealed Wilson Carvalho played with an injury in midweek after he picked it up in the 4-0 success at Cambridge.

And, with tomorrow’s clash being quickly followed by the visit of Stratford Town on Tuesday, Law insists some of his squad will need to be “patched up”.

“The squad was tested on Tuesday,” he said.

“Wilson was carrying an injury, we played him and he probably wasn’t as effective as we would have liked him to be.

“Rene failed a hamstring test and Brett came off at half-time with a hamstring so we were tested.

“It’s not about training ground stuff now. It’s about getting people patched up and prepared for another massive game and another three points that we need.”
