Kettering Town pay tribute to former player-manager Geoff Vowden

Kettering Town has paid tribute to the club’s former player and manager Geoff Vowden, who died this week aged 84.

Vowden, who enjoyed a successful playing career with the likes of Birmingham City, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, was player-manager at Rockingham Road in the 1974/75 season, having taken over the reins from Ron Atkinson.

A club statement read: “Today, the Poppies family remembers with great love and respect our former player and manager, Geoff Vowden, who sadly passed away on March 25, 2026.

"Geoff enjoyed a fabulous footballing career spanning many years, representing clubs including Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City and Aston Villa before joining Kettering Town as player-manager in 1974, succeeding Ron Atkinson and leaving a lasting mark on the club.

“Geoff was held in the highest esteem by his team-mates and peers.

“Many of our surviving legends from that era have been in touch with his family, sharing memories and paying their respects to a much-loved player and manager who meant so much to so many.

“Beyond the pitch, Geoff’s character truly shone.

“A kind and caring man, he fittingly concluded his footballing journey by supporting adults with learning disabilities, reflecting the compassion and humility that defined him.

“He was a very well-loved and deeply respected gentleman.

“It was an honour to welcome his son, Darren, to represent him at our Legends match in January, a moment that meant a great deal to all connected with the club.

“Our thoughts are with Geoff’s family and friends at this difficult time. He will forever remain part of the Poppies family.

“We will be holding a minute’s silence for Geoff on April 11 prior to our fixture with Worcester City.”

Birmingham and Villa also posted tributes to Vowden.

As a player, his longest spell was with the Blues who he played for between 1964 and 1971, and the club issued a statement that read: “The club are saddened to learn of the passing of former Blues forward Geoff Vowden.

“Vowden spent seven years at the club between 1964 and 1971, making 253 appearances and scoring 94 goals. He was the club’s leading goal scorer for three successive seasons.

“Birmingham City extend their heartfelt condolences to Geoff’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

Villa wrote: “Aston Villa is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former player Geoff Vowden, who has died at the age of 84.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Geoff’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Geoff scored 25 goals in 115 appearances for Villa, including the one which earned a 1-1 draw at Mansfield Town and clinched promotion from the old Third Division in 1972.”

As well as playing with such distinction in England, Vowden also played for New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League in 1974, and after leaving the Poppies went on to coach abroad, including a stint in Hong Kong.
