Jones and Tomlinson at the double as the Doughboys close in on play-offs

Wellingborough Town produced a brilliant fightback as they secured an impressive 4-1 win at Coventry Sphinx on Tuesday night to close to within a single point of the Pitching-In Northern Premier League MIdlands Division play-offs.

Jake Stone's side, who also came from behind and needed a last-gasp goal to win 2-1 at Bedworth United on Saturday, looked to be in trouble as they trailed 1-0 towards the end of the first half.

Sphinx had taken the lead through an own goal on 35 minutes, but the Doughboys were back in it just before the break, with Connor Tomlinson adding the finishing touch to make it 1-1 in the 42nd-minute.

The second half got off to the perfect start for Borough, as top-scorer Will Jones headed home at the far post to make it 2-1.

Sphinx fought to get back in the game, but the Doughboys held firm and with nine minutes left on the clock it was that man Jones again, heading home at the near post after a corner from James Clifton.

That was more or less job done for Stone's men, but there was still to be icing on the cake as Tomlinson also scored his second, this time from the penalty spot after Ethan Johnston was fouled in the box.

The victory saw the Doughboys stay sixth, but they moved to within a point of fifth-placed Coleshill Town, who are due to play Corby Town at Steel Park on Wednesday night.

Borough are also just two points off fourth-placed Belper Town.

Stone’s side are back at home on Saturday when they host Sutton Coldfield Town at the Dog & Duck.
