Jones and Draper on target as Doughboys claim first silverware of the season!

Wellingborough Town have secured their first silverware of the season - and it's still the middle of July!

Jake Stone's side took on Rushden & Higham United in the final of the NFA Maunsell Cup at Hayden Road on Tuesday night, and eased to a 2-0 success.

The match saw the Doughboys, who were winners of the NFA Hillier Senior Cup last season, take on the holders of the NFA Junior Cup.

That is a change to previous seasons, when the Senior Cup winners would normally take on an under-21 side from either Northampton Town or Peterborough United.

Effectively, the new format is a Northants FA 'super cup' and it was Step 4 side Doughboys who emerged victorious against their Step 6 hosts.

After an even start, Borough took the lead on 26 minutes when last season's top scorer Will Jones headed home a Charlie Green ball into the box.

That was how it stayed until the break, but 10 minutes into the second-half Borough doubled their lead when Danny Draper slotted home from the penalty spot.

That proved enough to seal the win and another pot for the Dog & Duck trophy cabinet.

Stone's side, who kick of the new season at Newark Town in the FA Cup on August 8, will continue the preparations on Saturday when they travel to MK Irish.
