Johnston and O'Connor on target as Doughboys sink Borough to go clear

Wellingborough Town have gone clear at the top of the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division after an excellent 2-0 win at fellow high-flyers Rugby Borough on Wednesday night.

Something had to give at Kilsby Lane as both sides went into the game defending 100 per cent records from their opening three league matches.

A tight game was all square at 0-0 at the break, but the deadlock was broken eight minutes into the second half when Ethan Johnston slotted home a penalty to give the Doughboys the advantage.

It was a third goal in two games for the former Northampton Town forward, who netted both in Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup win at Lincoln United.

Borough pushed to get back into the encounter, but the Doughboys sealed the points in the 72nd minute, with skipper Jack O'Connor heading home from a Sam Warburton long throw.

The win was a fourth in a row in the league for Jake Stone's side, who are two points clear at the top from second-placed Mickleover, who were 2-1 winners at Coventry United on Wednesday.

Sutton Coldfield, Rugby Borough and Carlton Town are all a further point back.

Wellingborough have now won six out of six in all competitions this season, scoring 18 goals in the process while conceding three.

The Doughboys will be aiming to maintain their perfect start to the campaign when they entertain Belper Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy on Saturday (ko 3pm).

Belper also play in the NPL Midlands Division, and have started their season with a win, a draw and two defeats.

Stone's side then return to league action on Bank Holiday Monday when they host St Ives Town at the Dog & Duck (ko 3pm).

Saints were relegated from Step 3 last season, but have struggled so far this term, claiming just four points from their first four outings.
