Glover keen to make full use of Poppies’ break from match action

Kettering Town are facing an enforced break from match action after the sub-zero temperatures left them kicking their heels this week.

The Poppies’ home clash with AFC Fylde was called off due to a frozen pitch at Latimer Park last weekend before their midweek trip to AFC Telford United suffered the same fate.

With no game this weekend after they were booted out of the Isuzu FA Trophy due to fielding an ineligible player in the last round, it means Lee Glover’s team won’t play a competitive game until they head to Peterborough Sports on Boxing Day.

By then, it will have been nearly three weeks since they last played in the Vanarama National League North when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Gloucester City.

But boss Glover is looking on the positive side as he feels the break will give some of his players a chance to get themselves fit after injury.

“What it does do is it gives us a chance to clear up a few injuries,” Glover said.

“We will be looking at getting everyone fully fit.

“We possibly had two or three missing on Tuesday so it’s a chance to get everyone well again.

“We will be able to have a few training sessions, top up on some fitness work and get them organised before we go back-to-back with Peterborough Sports, which will be two great tests for us.

“We will try to get a friendly sorted behind closed doors if we can because we wouldn’t have had a game for some time.

“But we are going to use this break to get people fit, top up on fitness and work on organisation.”

The Boxing Day clash at Sports will mark the halfway point of Glover’s first campaign in charge at Latimer Park.

It’s been tough so far and the Poppies currently sit in the final relegation spot after an up and down season so far.

But Glover believes his team are capable of improving and ensuring the second half of their campaign is better than the first.

“We are coming up to the halfway point of the season and we need to pick up more points in the second half than we did in the first, which I think we can,” he added.

“I think we can certainly be better in the second half of the season.

“I believe we have been improving but we need to improve again.”
