Familiar faces make Weir-Daley's move from Steel Park to Latimer Park easier

The experienced frontman joined Kettering Town on loan for the rest of the season from neighbours Corby Town at the start of the month.

And he has made a flying start for the Poppies with two goals in three games as they bid for a late charge towards the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division play-offs.

Weir-Daley scored just four minutes into his debut in Kettering’s 2-0 success at Chippenham Town and the added his second goal in three matches on Tuesday night when he put the Poppies 2-0 up on their way to a fine 3-0 victory over Dorchester Town at Latimer Park.

The striker admits swapping Corby for Kettering, who head to Histon on Saturday, was made easier with the likes of Wilson Carvalho, Herve Pepe-N’Goma, Chris Carruthers and Paul Walker having already done the same.

And, while he is unsure of what the summer will hold for him, Weir-Daley is just focused on trying to help the Poppies in the final two months of the campaign.

“There are familiar faces here so that has made the transition easier,” Weir-Daley said.

“I get on really well with the likes of Wilson, Herve, CC (Carruthers) and Walks (Walker) so it has made it easy.

“Most of the guys here are fine, I have played against a lot of them over the years so it has allowed me to play my football and take to it quite comfortably.

“I have signed here until the end of the season and when I left Corby to come here I looked at the league table and I just thought that if we can finish fifth and I can contribute with goals and assists then that will represent a good season for me because it has been a bit stop-start.

“And then, once the end of the campaign is here, I will look at it again and see what happens.”

There was certainly an element of luck to Weir-Daley’s goal on Tuesday night as his cross from the left deceived Dorchester goalkeeper Shaun Murphy and floated over him and into the net.

The strike gave the Poppies a foothold they deserved but the big question was whether Weir-Daley was actually going for goal or not.

When asked, he said: “Of course I meant it!

“It was one of those things really. I would like to think that I earned it.

“I peeled off, it was a good run and sometimes you earn a bit of luck. If you don’t make positive moves you don’t get the right outcome.

“I have not had too much luck in front of goal like that but I am happy to have scored again. It was my second goal in three games so it’s a good start.”
