Drury wants Steelmen to learn lessons from defeat to high-flying Doughboys

Boss Graham Drury believes his Corby Town squad will have 'learned lessons' from their defeat at the hands of runaway league leaders Wellingborough Town last weekend.

And he wants his players to take those lessons on board, starting with Saturday's Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division trip to fellow strugglers Barwell (ko 3pm).

The Steelmen slipped to second bottom in the table and are now five points adrift of safety after they were well beaten by the table-topping Doughboys.

The defeat was Drury's first loss in his second stint as Corby Town boss, having previously played out three encouraging draws and he will be looking to bounce back in Leicestershire this weekend.

He knows that won't be easy, but feels Wellingborough are the model to follow to ensure their results improve and Corby start moving up the table.

"Barwell have some really good players and I think they are in a false position," Drury told @chuckmiddleton.

"They have some good players, they have a good manager, and the fact is there is no game easy at Step 4.

"Even when we won it by 10 points, there was no easy game.

"Wellingborough look like they are going to win the league because they are well-oiled, they're big, they're strong and they are physical, and that is all over the pitch.

"There's not a weakness in their side.

"It was a tough game, and it is one that that you always learn from.

"We have learned lessons from the game, in that maybe we have to be a little bit more direct and play off the front man, instead of trying to be technically good on the ball through the thirds.

"These are the things you learn about the players, about the group, and how we are going to set up and play because we are going to have to get it right pretty soon.

"It is tough, but if you want to be in that top seven then you need to start picking points up.

"We have had a tough run of games, really tough, but no excuses from us, we have to be better and we will be as we go along."

Barwell are the team sitting one place above the relegation zone, and are five points better off than the Steelmen.

A win for Drury’s side would see them close that gap to two points, and Corby would still have two games in hand.

Following Saturday’s trip to Barwell, Corby are at home next Tuesday night when they host Mickleover at Steel Park (ko 7.45pm).
