Doughboys pegged back by St Neots but extend unbeaten run to six matches

Wellingborough Town missed the chance to go seventh in the Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division as they were held to a 1-1 draw by St Neots Town on New Year's Day.

In front of a bumper holiday crowd of 553 at the Dog & Duck, the Doughboys looked to be on course for a fifth straight win as they led 1-0 thanks to a 16th-minute strike from Will Jones.

That was to be the high point of a mixed afternoon for Jones, as his match was ended just before half-time as he was the victim of a robust challenge trying to add a second goal.

The tackle should have resulted in a penalty, but didn't, and Jones had to leave the field, being replaced by Nile Ranger.

The Doughboys created and missed further chances to extend their lead, and they paid the price for that when St Neots netted a 72nd-minute equaliser through former Doughboys striker Neo Richard Noel.

Jake Stone's side continued to press for a winner, but it wasn't to be as they had to settle for a draw that extends their unbeaten run to six matches.

They also moved up one place to ninth in the Midlands Division table, four points adrift of the promotion play-off places.

The Doughboys now have a free weekend before they return to action next Saturday (Jan 10) with a trip to 18th-placed Coventry Sphinx.
