Doughboys delight, Diamonds draw a blank, frustration for Steelmen

Wellingborough Town maintained their impressive recent home form as they cruised to a 3-0 Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midlands Division win over Boldmere St Michaels on Saturday.

It was a fourth match without defeat at the Dog & Duck, with the win lifting the Doughboys up to 15th in the table, and five points clear of the relegation zone.

Jake Stone's side got off to a great start and took a 19th-minute lead through Will Jones, with Theo Robinson then making it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time, heading home after Nile Ranger had teed him up.

The win and points were then sealed 10 minutes from time when Danny Draper calmly slotted home from the penalty spot to make it 3-0 and seal an excellent win for Borough.

The Doughboys now have a free midweek before they travel to Mickleover on Saturday (ko 3pm).

AFC Rushden & Diamonds were left to rue a host of missed chances as they claimed a 0-0 draw at high-flying Basford United on Saturday - with the frustration for boss Elliot Sandy being that the home side were reduced to 10 men after just 29 minutes.

Chances came and went in both halves for Diamonds, who had to settle for a share of the spoils against their fourth-placed hosts.

The point sees Diamonds stretch their unbeaten run to five matches, and they now sit 14th, six points above the bottom four, ahead of their next game which is a home date with league leaders Carlton Town at Hayden Road on Saturday (ko 3pm).

There was frustration for Corby Town on Saturday as their scheduled home clash with Shepshed Dynamo was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Steel Park.

On the plus side, the three teams above them - Basford, Anstey Nomads and Belper Town - all dropped points as they drew their fixtures, but there was another win for leaders Carlton, who edged past hosts Rugby Borough 1-0.

With sixth-placed Lichfield also not playing, Corby remain in fifth place in the table, six points off second-placed Belper with a game in hand, but they are now a whopping 14 adrift of Carlton, having played one game fewer.

Gary Setchell's side will aim to start closing that gap on Wednesday night when they entertain ninth-placed Rugby Borough, before going to Lichfield on Saturday.
