AFC Rushden & Diamonds’ 5-1 defeat at Leiston last night (Tuesday) was overshadowed by an incident towards the end of the game, which resulted in it being suspended for a spell.

Neither club has fully commented on the incident as yet but Diamonds player Eniola Agemoh-Davies took to social media last night to claim he was racially abused by a fan.

Writing on Twitter, Agemoh-Davies said: “Your team are winning 5-1 in a football match there is 3 minutes to go and a fan decides to racially abuse me unprovoked. When will this stop? @leistonfc will put out a statement and it will be forgotten about. No more needs to be said, @SouthernLeague1.”

While neither club has yet to comment on the allegation, Diamonds boss Richard Maxwell insisted he will be focused on supporting all his players following the incident.

“I am just upset that this sort of thing still occurs today,” Maxwell said.

“It visibly upset the players and, once the incident had happened, no-one really cared about the game afterwards.

“I am just going to support the players the best I can.”

Diamonds were already 5-1 down when the alleged incident occurred and the defeat saw them drop back down to the foot of the Southern League Premier Central table.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time, Diamonds got themselves back into it thanks to recent signing Andy Kanga’s first goal for the club.

But Leiston, who are now second in the table, struck three more times.

And Maxwell felt the final scoreline wasn’t a reflection of how the game panned out.

“It’s obviously a disappointing result,” he said.

“I was really pleased with the opening 15 minutes, we were the better team and we rattled the crossbar.

“But they sucker-punched us and then we switched off and they scored again and we were 2-0 down when we didn’t really deserve to be.

“We made changes at half-time and the guys were brilliant in possession, Andy got his goal and it felt like we would go on from there.

“But they have scored a good goal and then we have switched off again defensively and we have some work to do there.

“It didn’t feel like a 5-1 game. It didn’t reflect the game.”
