Corby Town aim to 'get the job done'

Gary Mills is hoping his Corby Town players can go and “get the job done” when they host Histon at Steel Park this weekend.

The re-arranged fixture serves as an opportunity for the Steelmen to all-but rid themselves of any relegation concerns as they currently hold a 12-point advantage over Histon who sit in the Step4/Step 5 relegation play-off spot in the Northern Premier League Midlands.

Corby will go into the clash having squandered a 3-0 half-time lead at Sporting Khalsa last Saturday as the hosts fought back to secure a 3-3 draw.

It was a game boss Mills felt summed up the up and down nature of his team’s season so far.

But he knows there is added importance attached to this weekend’s home encounter.

“I said after last Saturday’s game that it typified the way the season has been,” boss Mills said.

“But we have had Cambridge City away and Sporting Khalsa away and we have picked up four points from two away games and scored seven goals.

“It’s a good return for those last two games.

“Going back a few weeks now, there was a bit of concern and there is still a bit of concern that we still need points.

“We were only five points clear of the bottom three not that long ago but we have managed to get that gap to 12 and now we come up against one of those teams in there.

“You don’t have to be a genius to work out that the gap will either be 15 points, nine points or the same after this weekend.

“It’s a big game for us to ease that pressure.

“We need to get the job done, we need to go and play like we have done in the last few games because we have played well. We need to go and get the result we want.”

The Steelmen will have to do it without striker Elliot Sandy, however.

He was sent-off for handball on the goalline in last weekend’s draw at Sporting Khalsa with the resulting penalty giving the hosts their second goal.

He will now serve a one-match ban on Saturday, forcing Mills into a reshuffle.

“Elliot has played here, there and everywhere for me this season for various reasons,” the Corby manager added.

“More recently, he has gone back to his usual favourite position and he’s done well for us.

“He’s got a couple of goals and created a couple and played particularly well so he will be a loss for us with the way he’s been playing.

“But we will change it around a little bit and hopefully there won’t cause too much disruption going into the game.”
