Canavan: Poppies are only focused their own matches

Liam Canavan insists the Kettering Town players are solely focused on their own matches as they bid for a play-off place.

The frontman, who signed a long-term contract with the club at the turn of the year, grabbed his sixth goal of the season (pictured) on Tuesday night as the Poppies claimed a dramatic 2-0 success over Paulton Rovers in the first of seven successive matches at Latimer Park.

And it was probably the most important of his Kettering career so far.

The clash with the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division strugglers seemed to be heading for a goalless draw when Canavan hammered home the rebound after his initial header from a corner had been blocked with just two minutes remaining.

Silvano Obeng added the second soon after as the win – Kettering’s fourth in a row –ensured they stayed in touch with the teams above them.

Heading into this weekend’s home clash with St Neots Town, the Poppies are six points off the play-off places with games in hand on those around them.

But Canavan insists the squad, at this stage, have no interest in what other teams are doing.

“We don’t really check the other scores after the game,” he said.

“We just get on with our job but we know that if we can win the next few games then we will be in a good position to push ourselves into the play-offs.

“It wasn’t the best of games on Tuesday but we kept going and got the three points and now we will go again on Saturday and try to do the same.

“I didn’t think a goal was going to come but we are just pleased it did.

“I don’t think I have had a lot of luck this season. I thought I could come here and score 20-plus goals.

“I have hit the woodwork plenty of times and everyone has been sending messages asking when the goals were going to come!

“But hopefully there will be a few more now to help get us into the play-offs.”
